This glossary breaks down the terms you'll encounter when shopping for skid steers, mini excavators, compact track loaders, telehandlers, attachments, and compaction equipment. It's written for contractors, landscapers, and commercial buyers who want clear, practical definitions they can put to work.

Auger Attachment
A powered drilling attachment for skid steers and mini excavators, used to bore holes for fence posts, footings, sign poles, and tree planting. The auger bit spins hydraulically and is available in various diameters to match the job. When selecting one, confirm that your machine's auxiliary hydraulic flow (GPM) meets the auger's requirements.
Auxiliary Hydraulics
The hydraulic circuit on a skid steer, CTL, or excavator that powers attachments such as augers, brush cutters, and trenchers. Auxiliary hydraulics are rated by flow (measured in gallons per minute, or GPM) and pressure (measured in PSI). Matching your machine's hydraulic output to an attachment's requirements is essential for safe, efficient operation.
Breakout Force
The maximum digging or curling force a bucket or attachment can exert against the ground. Breakout force is measured in pounds and is a key comparison point when evaluating excavator buckets and loader arms for heavy earthmoving. Higher breakout force means the machine can handle harder, more compacted material.
Brush Cutter
A rotary cutting attachment designed for skid steers and compact track loaders, used in land clearing, vegetation management, and right-of-way maintenance. Brush cutters use heavy-duty blades or flail-style cutting heads to mow through thick brush, saplings, and overgrowth. They typically require high-flow hydraulics to operate at full capacity.
Bucket (Digging / General Purpose / Grading)
The most common attachment for skid steers and excavators, available in several profiles for different tasks. Digging buckets have narrow widths and aggressive teeth for trenching; general-purpose buckets handle a range of loading and grading work; grading buckets feature a wide, flat edge for finish grading and leveling. Choosing the right bucket profile saves time and reduces rework on the job.
Compact Track Loader (CTL)
A rubber-tracked loader that offers better traction and lower ground pressure than a wheeled skid steer, making it well suited for soft, muddy, or uneven terrain. CTLs are rated by their Rated Operating Capacity (ROC), which is calculated at 35% of tipping load. Key buying specs include operating weight, lift path configuration, and auxiliary hydraulic flow.
Compaction
The process of increasing soil or aggregate density to create a stable base for foundations, roads, trenches, and flatwork. Compaction is achieved using plate tampers, rammers, or vibratory rollers, depending on soil type and job conditions. Proper compaction prevents settling, shifting, and structural failure over time.
Dig Depth
The maximum depth a mini excavator can reach below grade level. Dig depth is one of the first specs buyers check when matching a machine to trenching, utility installation, or foundation work. It is measured from ground level to the lowest point the bucket tip can reach with the arm fully extended downward.
Grapple
A claw-like attachment for skid steers and excavators, designed to grab, hold, and move irregularly shaped materials such as brush, logs, demolition debris, and scrap. Grapples come in root, rock, and demolition styles, each optimized for different material types. They are hydraulically operated and mount via the machine's quick-attach plate.
Ground Pressure
The amount of downward force a machine exerts per unit of ground surface area, typically measured in pounds per square inch (PSI). Lower ground pressure is a major advantage of tracked machines over wheeled ones, especially when working on lawns, soft soil, or finished pavers. Buyers compare ground pressure specs to determine which machine will cause the least surface damage on sensitive sites.
High-Flow Hydraulics
An upgraded hydraulic circuit option on skid steers and CTLs that delivers higher gallons-per-minute (GPM) output than the standard auxiliary circuit. High-flow is necessary for running demanding attachments like brush cutters, cold planers, and forestry mulchers. When spec'ing a machine, verify that the high-flow option matches the GPM and PSI requirements of the attachments you plan to use.
Lift Path (Radial vs. Vertical)
The arc that a skid steer's or CTL's loader arms follow when raising a load. Radial-lift arms swing outward in a wide arc, providing better reach at mid-height for grading and ground-level work. Vertical-lift arms travel straighter upward, offering greater reach and stability at full height, which is preferred for loading trucks and placing materials over walls.
Mini Excavator
A compact, purpose-built digging machine typically weighing under 10 metric tons, used for trenching, utility work, demolition, and site prep. Buyers evaluate mini excavators by dig depth, tail swing, operating weight, and breakout force. Their small footprint makes them ideal for residential lots, urban sites, and other space-restricted jobs.
Mini Skid Steer
A compact utility loader (also called a stand-on loader or CUL) that fits through gates, doorways, and tight spaces where full-size skid steers cannot operate. Mini skid steers accept a wide range of attachments, including augers, trenchers, and grapples, through a universal attachment plate. They are a go-to machine for landscapers, hardscape installers, and utility contractors.
Operating Weight
The total weight of a machine including all fluids, standard equipment, and the operator. Operating weight directly affects trailer selection, transport logistics, ground pressure, and site access restrictions. It is one of the first specs to check when planning how you will move equipment to and from a job.
Pallet Forks
An attachment for skid steers, CTLs, and telehandlers that allows the machine to lift and transport palletized materials around a job site. Pallet forks are rated by load capacity and are available in various tine lengths. They mount to the universal skid steer attachment plate or, on telehandlers, to the boom-end carriage.
Plate Compactor (Plate Tamper)
A vibrating flat-plate machine used to compact granular soils, gravel, and asphalt in trenches, around foundations, and on flatwork areas. Plate compactors are rated by plate size, centrifugal force, and travel speed. They work best on cohesionless materials like sand and gravel, where vibration rearranges particles into a denser configuration.
Quick Coupler
A mechanical or hydraulic device that allows an operator to swap excavator or skid steer attachments rapidly, often without leaving the cab. Quick couplers save significant time on jobs that require frequent attachment changes. Hydraulic quick couplers, in particular, let operators connect and disconnect attachments with the push of a button.
Rammer
A jumping-jack style compactor designed for compacting cohesive soils (clay, silt) in narrow trenches and confined areas where plate compactors are less effective. Rammers deliver high-impact force through a small foot, driving air and moisture out of sticky soils. They are rated by shoe size, impact force, and jumping frequency.
Rated Operating Capacity (ROC)
The maximum load a skid steer or CTL is rated to carry under normal working conditions. ROC is calculated as a percentage of the machine's tipping load: 50% for wheeled skid steers and 35% for compact track loaders, following industry conventions set by AEM. Always compare ROC (not tipping load) when evaluating machines side by side.
Skid Steer Loader
A rigid-frame, wheeled loader that steers by varying the speed of its left and right wheel sets, allowing it to pivot in place. Skid steers are among the most versatile machines on a job site thanks to the universal attachment plate that accepts hundreds of attachment types. Key specs include ROC, horsepower, lift path, and auxiliary hydraulic flow.
Snow Pusher
A wide, box-style blade attachment for skid steers and CTLs, designed to push large volumes of snow efficiently across parking lots, loading docks, and commercial properties. Snow pushers contain snow within their side panels to minimize spillage and reduce the number of passes needed. They are a staple for snow removal contractors managing large paved areas.
Tail Swing (Zero Tail Swing)
The distance an excavator's counterweight extends beyond the width of its tracks when the upper structure rotates. A zero-tail-swing (ZTS) design keeps the counterweight within the track width, allowing the machine to work safely next to walls, fences, and other obstacles. ZTS mini excavators are strongly preferred for confined residential and urban job sites.
Telehandler
A telescoping-boom forklift built for construction sites, capable of lifting loads to heights and forward reaches that conventional forklifts cannot match. Telehandlers are evaluated by maximum lift height, forward reach, and their load chart, which shows safe capacity at each combination of height and extension. They handle pallet forks, buckets, work platforms, and other boom-tip attachments.
Tilt Rotator
A device mounted between an excavator's arm and its attachment that provides 360-degree continuous rotation and approximately ±45 degrees of side-to-side tilt. Tilt rotators dramatically increase an excavator's versatility, allowing the operator to grade slopes, dig at angles, and position objects precisely without repositioning the machine. Trencher Attachment
A chain- or wheel-driven attachment for skid steers and mini skid steers that cuts narrow trenches for utilities, irrigation lines, and drainage pipe. They offer a faster, more precise alternative to hand-digging or using a full-size trenching machine.
Vibratory Roller
A compaction machine that uses a vibrating steel drum to increase soil or asphalt density on roads, parking lots, and building pads. Vibratory rollers are rated by drum width, static weight, and centrifugal force. The vibration allows the roller to achieve deeper compaction than static weight alone, reducing the number of passes required.
